Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a two-time Tony Award winner, and one of the most groundbreaking works of 20th-Century American theatre that you may have never seen before, Fences is perhaps the most celebrated entry in August Wilson’s magnum opus, the 10-play “Pittsburgh Cycle” that explores the heritage and experience of African-Americans, decade by decade, over the course of the twentieth century. Fences tells the story of Troy Maxson, a former star of the Negro baseball leagues who was too old to play when the game eventually integrated. Now scraping by as a garbage man in 1957 Pittsburgh, Troy has grown increasingly bitter, and his anger and frustration take a toll on his wife Rose and his son Cory, who’s ready for his chance to follow his own dreams to stardom. Fences explores the walls we build around ourselves and our loved ones, while also illuminating one American family’s struggles in our society. RiverStage is honored and excited to bring this production to the stage, dedicated to the memory of our friend and board member Derek Scott (1966-2023).
You do not want to miss this incredibly rare opportunity to see Fences for yourself, here in the central Susquehanna Valley — purchase your tickets here today!
Note: The show is strongly recommended for ages 13 and up, as it contains strong and sexual language, racial epithets, and violence.
